ASPIRE College Counselor (Posted October 29th, 2009)

The Miami Science Museum seeks a college counselor for its Youth Program participants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop of individual guidance plan for each participant (including career interest assessment, student transcript review checklist, list of potential college for each student to apply, guide students through the college/scholarship application process)
• Develop comprehensive scholarship database related to Youth Participants’ specific needs
• Conduct FASFA seminars for parents
• Assist parents/students in completion of financial documents
• Prepare college information session for family and friends at annual culminating banquets in December and June

Minimum Job Requirements:
• At least 2 years experience with college counseling for high school students
• Experience working with inner city, high school students
• Creole and Spanish speakers preferred, but not necessary

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
• Ability to communicate well with inner city high school students
• Ability to listen well to interoperate students’ needs and help them create realistic goals for college and careers
• Knowledge of Dade county high school graduation requirements
• Knowledge of educational requirements for various career fields

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
• Youth program runs from September 26, 2009-June 5, 2010, Saturdays from 10:00 am–6:00 pm
• There are no physical requirements; however, applicants need to have enough energy to work with high school students
• This position will be extended annually based on performance and availability of grant funding.
• Pay Rate: $35/hour
