SENIOR ACCOUNTANT (Posted July 16th, 2009)
SUMMARY:
The Senior Accountant assists in maintaining the integrity of day-to-day operations of the Finance Department, and the effective use of financial resources of the Museum. This position will oversee the work of all subordinates with indirect reporting lines, as well as serving as a liaison and backup to the Accounting Manager. Further, the Senior Accountant works to understand and take ownership of all General Ledger.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform general activities associated with the maintenance of General Ledger accounts. This will include, but not be limited to, modifying the chart of accounts, creating well supported journal entries, analyzing and adjusting account balances.
• Responsible for facilitating timely and accurate completion of the monthly closing process, including the review of journal entries and inter-company transfers.
• Responsible for the reconciliation of cash accounts, credit card statements, trial balance and all other GL accounts.
• Prepare and post monthly and year-end journal entries.
• Maintain electronic supporting documentation.
• Coordinate with Accounting Manger, Controller and external auditors to complete annual audits.
• Assist in preparing and maintaining financial reports and analysis.
• Engage in the responsibilities of planning, evaluating, organizing and processing improvements and controls.
• Propose and implement procedures to ensure proper fiscal controls, streamline workflow and create efficiencies.
• Participate in special projects and other job-related duties as assigned.
• Processing grants in accounting systems to provide grants entry, grants review, grants reconciliation and completion of grants closures
• Perform grant-related post-award functions:
o Budget variance analysis
o Periodic invoicing
o Financial reporting
o Labor distribution changes
o Associated communications with customers
o Perform grant closeout reporting and related functions required by Grants and Contracts Administration
o Includes, financial status reports, final invoices, purchase order liquidations, zeroing out budgets, and final reporting.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Accounting. Prior accounting experience required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Demonstrated proficiency with all parts of the accounting cycle.
• Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
• Experience with Financial Accounting software with a demonstrated ability to implement new functionality and document processes.
• Ability to work with complex financial situations and formulate financial systems compatible solutions.
• Strong reconciliation and GL closing experience.
• Working knowledge of current FASB and accounting standards.
• Proficiency with office computers and software tools, including Internet navigation, MS Office, including Excel spreadsheets, Visio diagrams, and PowerPoint Presentations.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as presentation competency.
• Knowledge of management principles and practices, as well as a demonstrated ability to implement new policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• Work is normally performed in an interior office environment with minimal physical effort. Ability to lift and handle document boxes up to 20 pounds.
• Weekend and/or evening hours may be required.
